Study Tips for Body Parts & Health

1

Practise doler the way you learned gustar: me duele la espalda (one thing hurts), me duelen los ojos (several things hurt). The verb agrees with the body part, not with the person.

2

Use the article, not a possessive, with body parts: me lavo el pelo, me rompí la pierna. Saying mi pierna in these sentences sounds like a word-for-word translation from English.

3

Learn la mano as an exception from day one. It ends in -o but is feminine, so every adjective agrees: la mano izquierda, las manos frías.

4

Learn the false friend embarazada (pregnant) before you ever need the word for embarrassed (avergonzado/a). It is one of the best-known slips in Spanish.
