Study Tips for Numbers & Time

1

Give 70, 80 and 90 their own cards and drill them as sums: soixante-dix is 60 + 10, quatre-vingts is 4 × 20 and quatre-vingt-dix is 4 × 20 + 10. These are the numbers learners hesitate on in prices and phone numbers.

2

Practise phone numbers the French way, in pairs: 06 12 75 98 40 is read zéro six, douze, soixante-quinze, quatre-vingt-dix-huit, quarante.

3

Say heures every time you tell the time (il est trois heures), even on the hour. Leaving it out is the most common learner error, and it makes the sentence sound unfinished.

4

Write days and months in lower case and drop the preposition: lundi means on Monday, while le lundi means every Monday.
