Study Tips for Body Parts & Health

1

Drill avoir mal à with its contractions: j'ai mal à la tête, j'ai mal au dos, j'ai mal aux dents. The à + le = au and à + les = aux changes are where learners slip.

2

Learn l'œil and les yeux together on one card. The plural is so irregular that you will never guess it from the singular, and liaison makes les yeux sound like 'lay-zyeu'.

3

Remember that j'ai mal au cœur means you feel sick, not that your heart hurts. For chest pain, say j'ai une douleur à la poitrine.

4

Keep le médicament (a medicine you take) and la médecine (the profession) on separate cards, and note that le médecin is the everyday word for any doctor.
